NOTICE: Spongy moth aerial treatment near KOSU during June 2022

The Ohio Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will conduct aerial spraying in mid-June to help suppress the invasive spongy moth (formerly gypsy moth). Destructive to more than 300 species of trees and shrubs, the spongy moth is considered one of the most destructive insect pests in Ohio, threatening forests and ornamental plants.

During the treatment period local residents can expect to see low-flying aircraft throughout the area near The Ohio State University Airport. Aircraft flown approximately 100-200 feet above the treetops will deliver applications. Dates of application are tentatively scheduled for June 15 – 21.

Treatments will occur between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and the Ohio Department of Agriculture will post signs around the treatment areas by 5 p.m. the day before. Individuals may wish to remain indoors, but there is no requirement to do so.

The Ohio State University Airport is not involved in the program and the spraying aircraft plan to operate from another airport.
